How does Viagra purple work?

Viagra purple is an oral medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. An erection occurs when blood flow increases into the penis, making it expand and become firm. Spongy tissue contained within the two long chambers inside the penis, called the corpora cavernosa, are responsible for drawing blood into the chambers creating pressure that results in the expansion of the penis.

Viagra purple, as a selective inhibitor of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP)-specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), works to block certain naturally occurring enzymes in the body, causing blood vessels to dilate and enhancing blood flow to the penis. Viagra purple does not automatically cause an erection; rather, it assists a man with ED in obtaining and keeping an erection when sexually aroused or stimulated.

Getting an erection involves your heart, blood vessels, hormones, nerves, and even your mood to be in harmony. But essentially erections mostly boil down to increasing blood flow to the penis and trapping that blood flow in special erectile tissues in the penis. An erect penis contains up to 8x more blood than a flaccid penis. Eventually, this trapped blood gets released, the erection ends, and blood flow returns to normal. Generic Viagra purple works by interfering with the process that lets blood leave an erect penis.

The biological half-life of Viagra purple 100 mg is three to four hours. Therefore, its total effect stays for approximately 5-6 hours in body. During this phase, one can achieve multiple rigid erections on sexual stimulation.

How should this medicine be used?

Purple Viagra tablets is available in a variety of dosages, including 25mg, 50mg, 100mg, 120mg and 150mg. Usually, men begin the treatment with a 50mg tablet. Erectile problems in young men are usually due to psychological factors, rather than a physical cause. Therefore younger men may wish to try the 25mg dosage first, as it is likely to be sufficient to boost their confidence and help them enjoy sex. More senior men may also need to use a lower dosage, as they may not tolerate the side effects of a higher dose. If the Viagra purple 50mg dosage does not have the required effect, you may need take Viagra purple 100mg. However, it is worth trying the same dosage another 2-3 times before increasing it, in case other factors such as anxiety are at play.

Drug Interactions

Amlodipine

When Viagra purple 100 mg was co-administered with amlodipine (5 mg or 10 mg) to hypertensive patients, the mean additional reduction on supine blood pressure was 8 mmHg systolic and 7 mmHg diastolic.

Alpha-blockers

Use caution when co-administering alpha-blockers with Viagra purple because of potential additive blood pressure-lowering effects. When Viagra purple is co-administered with an alpha-blocker, patients should be stable on alpha-blocker therapy prior to initiating treatment and Viagra purple should be initiated at the lowest dose.

Alcohol

In a drug-drug interaction study sildenafil 50 mg given with alcohol 0.5 g/kg in which mean maximum blood alcohol levels of 0.08% was achieved, sildenafil did not potentiate the hypotensive effect of alcohol in healthy volunteers.

Nitrates

Administration of Viagra purple with nitric oxide donors such as organic nitrates or organic nitrites in any form is contraindicated. Consistent with its known effects on the nitric oxide/cGMP pathway, Viagra purple was shown to potentiate the hypotensive effects of nitrates.

Ritonavir and other CYP3A4 inhibitors

Co-administration of ritonavir, a strong CYP3A4 inhibitor, greatly increased the systemic exposure of sildenafil (11-fold increase in AUC). It is therefore recommended not to exceed a maximum single dose of 25 mg of Viagra purple in a 48 hour period.
Co-administration of erythromycin, a moderate CYP3A4 inhibitor, resulted in a 160% and 182% increases in sildenafil Cmax and AUC, respectively. Co-administration of saquinavir, a strong CYP3A4 inhibitor, resulted in 140% and 210% increases in sildenafil Cmax and AUC, respectively. Stronger CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ketoconazole or itraconazole could be expected to have greater effects than seen with saquinavir. A starting dose of 25 mg of Viagra purple should be considered in patients taking erythromycin or strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (such as saquinavir, ketoconazole, itraconazole).
